At the heart of our puppy-raising program is intentionality. Every stage of a puppy’s development presents unique opportunities to build confidence, resilience, and emotional stability. Because puppies develop at an incredible pace, we carefully tailor their environment, experiences, and enrichment to match their developmental needs week by week.
From birth through eight weeks of age, we focus on critical developmental windows that research has shown can profoundly influence a puppy’s future temperament and adaptability. Our goal is not simply to raise healthy puppies, but to help each one reach its fullest potential.
Puppies are raised in our home as part of our family. This hands-on approach allows us to closely monitor their growth, provide individualized care, and expose them to the everyday sights and sounds of family life. We also place a strong emphasis on socialization, confidence-building, early learning, crate training, and positive experiences that prepare each puppy for a successful transition into their forever home.
Week 1: Birth to 1 Week
The puppies have finally arrived! During their first week of life, puppies are entirely dependent on their mother. They are born with their eyes and ears closed and navigate their world through touch and scent. Most of their time is spent nursing and sleeping while mom provides constant care.
Our focus during this week is ensuring each puppy is thriving, gaining weight appropriately, and receiving the care they need to grow strong and healthy. Beginning on Day 3, we start both Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI), which continue through Day 16.
Benefits of ENS include:
- Improved cardiovascular performance
- Stronger heart function
- Enhanced stress tolerance
- Greater emotional resilience
- Increased disease resistance
Benefits of ESI include:
- Enhanced scent recognition
- Improved nose awareness
- Increased ability to identify and respond to scents
These early exercises help lay the foundation for confident, adaptable adult dogs.
Week 2: 1 to 2 Weeks
The puppies continue spending most of their time eating and sleeping, but remarkable changes are happening every day. They gain strength in their legs, become more mobile, and begin exploring their immediate surroundings.
Toward the end of this week, tiny eyes begin to open, and some puppies start responding to sounds as their ears gradually open. It’s exciting to watch them become more aware of the world around them.
Week 3: 2 to 3 Weeks
This week marks a major developmental milestone. The puppies’ eyes are fully open, their hearing is improving, and they begin taking their first wobbly steps.
Their personalities start emerging as they interact more with their littermates and environment. We begin introducing gentle household sounds and everyday experiences to help build confidence. Puppy pads are also introduced, and we start encouraging appropriate elimination habits when puppies wake from naps.
Week 4: 3 to 4 Weeks
The socialization period officially begins. Puppies are now walking, climbing, playing, and actively engaging with people and littermates. Their curiosity grows daily, and they become eager to explore.
During this week we:
- Introduce a litter box and puppy pads
- Begin early potty-training concepts
- Provide new toys and enrichment daily
- Encourage exploration and problem-solving
- Administer the first deworming treatment
This is one of the most enjoyable stages as puppies become increasingly interactive and responsive.
Week 5: 4 to 5 Weeks
A whole new world opens up during Week 5. Puppies begin the first stages of weaning while continuing to nurse several times per day. We introduce softened puppy food and expand their environment to accommodate their growing curiosity and independence.
This week includes:
- Introduction to wet puppy food
- Outdoor exploration in safe, controlled areas
- Exposure to new sights, sounds, smells, and textures
- Larger play areas for increased exploration
- Continued socialization and confidence building
Every experience is designed to help puppies learn that new things are safe and enjoyable.
Week 6: 5 to 6 Weeks
Week 6 is filled with enrichment and learning opportunities. Puppies become increasingly aware of their surroundings and begin developing confidence and independence.
During this week we:
- Introduce a variety of surfaces, sounds, toys, and experiences
- Welcome trusted visitors to assist with socialization
- Begin doggy door training
- Encourage outdoor potty habits
- Start crate training with short periods of quiet, positive alone time
- Introduce car rides
- Administer the second deworming treatment
By this stage, puppies are eating solid food several times daily while mom gradually reduces nursing sessions.
Week 7: 6 to 7 Weeks
The puppies are now energetic, confident, and eager to learn. Their physical coordination and social skills continue improving rapidly.
This week focuses on:
- Expanding outdoor exploration
- Strengthening potty-training habits
- Continued doggy door independence
- Learning simple manners such as sitting politely for food or attention
- New obstacles, sounds, and enrichment activities
- Increased socialization with a variety of people
Crate training becomes a larger focus during this stage. Puppies begin taking naps in individual crates, helping them develop independence, self-soothing skills, and positive associations with their future home environment.
Week 8: 7 to 8 Weeks
The final week is all about preparing puppies for their transition to their forever families.
During Week 8 we:
- Administer the final deworming treatment
- Provide the first vaccination series
- Continue crate training and confidence-building exercises
- Reinforce polite behaviors and basic manners
- Welcome additional visitors for continued socialization
- Give each puppy a final bath and grooming session
By this point, the puppies have experienced a carefully planned progression of socialization, enrichment, training, and developmental support designed to prepare them for life with their new families.
While saying goodbye is never easy, it is incredibly rewarding to watch each puppy begin the next chapter of their journey. We cherish receiving updates and following their growth as they become beloved members of their forever families.
Our Commitment
We believe raising exceptional puppies requires far more than feeding, cleaning, and cuddling. It requires time, dedication, research, and a deep understanding of canine development.
Every experience during these first eight weeks matters. Our commitment is to provide each puppy with the very best start in life—helping them become confident, resilient, emotionally healthy companions who are prepared to thrive in their new homes.
